Howard L. Sobel, MD, MPH World Health Organization, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Howard L Sobel, MD, MPH, is an Internist, Pediatrician and Preventive Medicine Physician and Team Leader for Maternal and Child Health at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cambodia. He is an incoming member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Human Lactation. Dr. Sobel gained his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, Medical Doctorate at Medical College of Virginia and Master’s of Public Health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health where he was Chief Resident and instructor. He has additionally worked in WHO Headquarters (Geneva, HIV), Guyana (Expanded Program for Immunizations), Ghana (immunization consultant), Taiwan (SARS) and most recently Philippines and Cambodia (Maternal and Child Health Team Leader). He has additionally worked in Uganda (refugee health) and China (researcher). He focuses on operationalizing evidence-based programs that save maternal, newborn and child lives in developing countries. Current topics of work include:

  1. Strengthening health worker intra-partum and newborn care practices
  2. Infant and young child feeding
  3. Improving health worker diagnostic capacity, care and counseling for the sick newborn and young infants with respiratory illness
  4. Improving quality and usage Maternal Death Audits
  5. Evidence-based policy and standards development
