Sandra J. Hewett is the Beverly Pettersen Bishop Professor of Neuroscience and Executive Director of Neuroscience Studies. Dr. Hewett’s scientific interests lie in determining the mechanisms underlying cell death and protection in the central nervous system, with a specific focus on the role of inflammation, astrocytes and cystine/glutamate exchange. Her research program is recognized at both the national and international level. Her work has been continuously supported from extramural sources, most notably from the National Institutes of Health. She’s received several scientific awards and sits on the board of three other international neuroscience journals. Dr. Hewett joined Syracuse University in 2011 as the Bishop Professor to enhance and build interdisciplinary neuroscience programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, respectively.
