Succeeding in Essays, Exams and OSCEs for Nursing Students
This book helps nursing students better understand the processes of assessment so that every student can achieve their potential in their studies. It looks at each of the major forms of assessment including essays, exams, portfolios, presentations, OSCEs and practice assessments. It specifically addresses the needs of nursing students on new degree courses and therefore gives a clear insight on how to succeed as a student nurse.
A good guide that gives very comprehensive, structured advice and tips for students, delivered in a format that is understandable to all and a good starting point.
This is an easy to read text with clear information on the various forms of assessment on nursing courses. The information and advice given is clear, while the text also encourages student activity. There are a number of themes running through the text. That of professional practice is clear from the outset, making this a useful text for students who have not yet commenced their programme, but are looking for information on what a nursing programme is about. For this reason I would recommend it to students with a place on the programme, but with time to prepare before the start date.
The focus on course documentation is also useful, encouraging students to look more closely at module/unit materials, outcomes and resources than they might normally do.
Examples of failing students in relation to essay writing and clinical assessment are clear, and likely to be presenting issues that students could identify with. The focus of avoiding failure, as opposed to achieving highly, leads me to feel that this is a text I might recommend to students needing to address a number of assignments, and required to take time out of the course to do so. This text could be a good starting point, particularly as it encourages reflection on past experience and attention to feedback.
a good overview for the students on this topic area.
An excellent book that covers the main forms of assessment in a clear and user-friendly manner, using plenty of activities to help nursing students increase their confidence and performance in assessments. Another welcome addition to the excellent Transforming Nursing Practice series.
The chapters define the variety of assessments undertaken in pre-registration nursing both academically and clinically. As with all of the Transforming Nursing practice series the actitvities enable students to be active participants in thier own learning.
Focusing on critical thinking, reflection, decision making. Set in the context of the NMC Standards for pre-registration education outlining the domains and NMC skills lclusters. This text breaks down the different types of assignments the students may be asked to undertake. How to write plans, demonstrate knowledge, writing critically and avoiding plagiarism are the standard requirements for acdaemic writing that students need to develop.useful chapter on portfolios as a process of reflection and development. All exceptionally useful for the programme student will undetake here. Good value.
The chapters on succeeding in written assignment and planning assignments will be useful for CPD students returning to study..
This is a handy book for students who are new to academia and the issues associated with preparing for assessments. Once again, I really like the way that this text is linked directly to the NMC outcomes as this makes it more applicable and alive for the student.
Very useful book for all nursing students on an undergraduate programme - has the potential to not only smoothe the assessment transition for students moving from secondary to higher education but has many tacit reminders for the more senior students pertaining to role-play and presentations.
The books in this series are excellent. Clear, precise and detailed.
This is a handy text full of activities, summaries and useful websites. It is concise and should appeal to any student who is looking for some quick support to help them in their assessments related to essays, exams and OSCEs. Linking with the NMC Standards and Essential Skills Clusters make it very pertinent for the pre-registration student. However, it is also suited to the post-registration/return to practice student who may have been out of study for a while. This book should be on every student's shopping list and would make a useful present.
